What is World Prematurity Day?

Find out what World Prematurity Day is, and how Bliss gets involved in the UK and globally.

What is World Prematurity Day?

World Prematurity Day (17 November 2019) is a global movement to raise awareness of premature birth and the sometimes devastating impact it can have on families.

On this day Bliss comes together with partners from around the world to talk about premature birth in our countries and to raise awareness about the hurdles babies and parents face, and overcome, every single day.

In the UK

We know nothing can prepare parents for how it feels to have a baby in neonatal care. But it can be a huge support to know other families have been where they are now.

For World Prematurity Day 2019, Bliss wants more parents to know they are not alone.

That’s why we’re asking you to get involved by sharing what you wish someone had told you when you first arrived on the unit using #IWishIdKnown on social media.

#IWishIdKnown – our 2019 message

1 in 10 babies are born premature worldwide. Yet so many parents are unprepared for the possibility of having a baby in neonatal care.

How do you care for a baby in an incubator? How do you handle the ups and downs of your baby’s journey? What do you tell your friends and family? How do you switch off when you need to sleep?

We know what a difference it can make to hear from someone who has been there and to know you're not alone.

That’s why we’re asking parents, family members, friends and healthcare professionals – anyone touched by the needs of premature babies – to share what they wish someone had told them when they first arrived on the neonatal unit.

World Prematurity Day Internationally

Sadly, prematurity is the leading cause of death in children under five.

15 million

babies are born prematurely every year

One million

of these babies will not survive

World Prematurity Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of premature birth and work with partners around the world to prevent it.

Bliss is a member of the World Prematurity Network (WPN), whose members include March of Dimes, EFCNI, LittlebigSouls International Foundation, National Premmie Foundation, Borngreat Foundation, Con Amor Venceras, and the Canadian Premature Babies Foundation.

WaterWipes baby cards

This World Prematurity Day we are partnering with WaterWipes to develop a new set of baby cards to help parents celebrate all the incredible milestones in their premature baby’s neonatal journey.

Each beautifully designed card has space for parents to capture their baby’s milestones in their own words, and will include a brand new card, 'Today I made a mess'.

The new packs will be launched in time for World Prematurity Day and will be available free of charge to all parents with a baby on the neonatal unit.
